Hello my fellow Trout Hunters!
Yes my friends! It’s another wonderful conditions report from Decker’s/Trumbull, Colorado! I am just blow away at how beautiful the conditions and the fishing has been for the last week or so. The fact that it’s the end of October and I can still fish in a t-shirt, no waders, and stay out until 6pm catching fish, is such a joy! Flowing at 70 (cfs) in Decker’s and Trumbull, the dam is a bit lower at 62.5 (cfs). The clarity is excellent, offering plenty of sight fishing, but requiring a stealthy approach. Fished all afternoon today, pulling in about 6 fish, but hooking up on about a dozen! We started out with dry-flies immediately, as we got on the river about 11 or so. I began throwing last night’s set-up, with a single dry caddis, for about the first twenty minutes, hooking up on three fish in a bubble seem, along a granite wall. Ben was a little further upstream with a dry-dropping approach in some faster, but shallower water and took a beast on a grey, Sparkle-wing RS-2. Due to a couple of dogs, a few willows, and some snags on the bottom, we were forced to pick several new flies to replace the old, as the morning rolled into afternoon! Let’s just call it, “the price of doing business” Not to worry, Flies and Lies http://www.flies-n-lies.com is just up the road, so when I need a few to match a hatch, up the road I go! Around three o’clock, things really got going up top! Both of us switched over to a combination of single dry flies, big Simulator bugs, double rigs of dries and emergers. Pretty much make it look presentable and you’re going to get on some fish! We continued this pattern of fishing until 3:30 or so, but could have remained on the river and caught fish all evening! With all of this going on, the word is out, so expect to see bigger crowds as we get closer to the weekend. Last weekend was a busy one, so if your looking for a little solitude, consider fishing water downstream from Bridge Crossing, not only where there are less people, but the fish see considerably less pressure this time of year, typically giving you a better chance on fish that aren’t so used to seeing every pattern under the sun thrown at them, such as the fish by the Decker’s Resort and bridge area. Only a few pics today, but look at the Rainbow that Ben landed early in the day! That’s all for now folks! Hope to see you out there while we have this excellent weather! Until then, take care!

Oct. 27, 2016 Bug, Fish, and Conditions Report!
Fishing Conditions, fishing report[Best_Wordpress_Gallery id=”86″ gal_title=”Oct.27 flow 68 browns and bows on dries with ike”]
We’ll Summer ever leave us?
Hi folks! The high pressure continues to dominate our region, resulting in summer-like temperatures, plenty of sunshine and lots of bugs on the water! Still down on the flows, most likely will be seeing a continued flow of 70 (cfs) for the time being, at least until we start to see some moisture. Similar conditions in the Canyon, with just a slight bit slower flow at 64 (cfs). Up side of the low flows, fish are congregated and feasting on the abundant buffet of dries that hatching throughout the day. Pressure up here on the South Platte, Decker’s/Trumbull has been average to busy by mid-morning, but there is plenty of room to find a spot to toss a fly, with over 15 miles of quality fishing! Heading downstream tomorrow to fish the Platte River Campground area, just about a mile down from where I live. Today was all about the dry-fly for me, with my buddy Ike on the nymph rig when the rise died down. We both did well by finding small runs along bubble lines, where the trout were casually sipping the surface, with the occasional big fish going “big air” after a bigger bug. Both browns and bow’s were taking BWO’S, along with a grey, RS-2. Got to run for now my friends! Have a safe Friday and I’ll be back tomorrow! Remember! Stage 1 Fire Resrictions are in place for both Jefferson and Douglas County. THAT MEANS NO OPEN BURNING.

Oct. 26, 2016 Decker’s fishing update
Fishing Conditions, fishing report[Best_Wordpress_Gallery id=”85″ gal_title=”oct.26 deer in yard, flows at 70″]
Good evening and welcome to the daily fishing report! Hungry fish and great weather have dominated for most of October! Today was no different, as the bugs are plentiful, the fishery is healthy, and the weather couldn’t be better! Flows continue to remain at their low levels, Trumbull/Decker’s at 70 (cfs) or so, with the Canyon at 64 (cfs). Looking ahead to the weekend in Decker’s, we’re expecting to see quite a few people on the river. Got some information today from some folks who had a planned trip to the Dream Stream, that because the flows have been dropped there, that they are moving their trip to Decker’s. If this is the case, expect larger crowds around the Decker’s area. With that being said, don’t pass up your options downstream from Decker’s, as the fish generally see less pressure and your chance of finding some solitude are much greater! I got out on the river today at about 3:30, and pretty quickly pulled a few trout on a single BWO, size#24. After the rise quieted down and nymphing seemed like a better option, I put on a yellow egg, followed with a olive Rs-2, trailing a juju-beatis. Caught a couple of smaller Rainbow’s and one larger brown, in the neighborhood of 16-17 inches! With the increase in the temperatures and a sunny forecast, I’m hoping to get out a little earlier tomorrow, in anticipation of a thicker hatch. This has been the pattern when the skies are clear and the temps quickly rise. I only took a few pictures today, but I did manage to get some good shots of a herd of deer in our yard this morning! Some of the other shots are from the last week or two around the Decker’s/Trumbull area, hope you enjoy!
That’s all I got on the fishing front, but there is some other information I would like to pass along.
Effective at 6:00 p.m., October 19, 2016, the Jefferson County Sheriff will enact Stage 1 Fire Restrictions for all unincorporated Jefferson County. These restrictions are being enacted due to current dry conditions favorable for the possibility of a wildfire, and limited availability of fire control resources. Conditions will continue to be monitored and restrictions will be adjusted in the coming weeks as necessary. For more information, visit http://jeffco.us/sheriff/wildfire/fire-restrictions-and-bans/. The same goes for Douglas County, effective October 17, 2016. Well, that’s all for now folks! Until next time, have a great evening, GO CUBS! and I hope to see you on the river soon!

Oct. 25, 2016 River update and Report
Fishing Conditions, fishing reportWelcome Back!
Hey there folks, another fine day here on the South Platte River, Decker’s Colorado! Little less sunny this morning, but warmed up nicely by mid-afternoon! No change on the flows, we’re still sitting at 70 (cfs) here in Decker’s/Trumbull, with a little less in the Canyon. Today was nice, but certainly not as sunny as it’s been for the last three or four days. Biggest difference in the conditions this morning was the lack of thick hatches that we’ve been seeing before 11am. Although the fish were sipping just under the surface all day long today, they were a little more selective on the dries, as we did our best to commit to fishing the surface bugs. Funny how the fish can completely act in a different way one day to the next, however, we did manage to hook up on about eight to ten fish before we called it a day. Most the success we had today was with the small stuff, size #22/24 on the midges and the dries. First fish I took was on a single Parachute Adams, of which I later added an emerging bug, as the surface action seemed to die off around 2:30pm. About 3pm we had a little rain shower that lasted all of five minutes, which afterwards got the fish pretty turned on again, as the sipping resumed! Seeing that the trout were moving up and down the water column, I went ahead and added an emerging bug to my freshly tied BWO. This tactic seemed to get the attention of several eager fish that were sipping along a bubble line that met the main stream flow, along a granite wall. In just a short period of time, I hooked into two fish, both on the trailing Sparkle-Wing RS-2, size #24. Having a shoulder injury, I prefer to toss a dry fly when it’s productive, but the nymphing will usually put more fish in the net. With that being said, I do regularly nymph, but have an adapted version of the proper technique! Underneath, the guys and gals I usually fish with have been doing well with a three-fly rig, with a variety of bugs, but a few that have worked lately have been the flashier midges and emergers, trailing an egg or worm. The weather for the rest of the week looks fantastic, so be sure to make some time to get up here and fish! That’s all for today my friends. Until next time, have a great evening and I’ll hopefully see you in the Valley soon!

Oct.23, 2016 The scoop on the fish’n!
Fishing Conditions, fishing report[Best_Wordpress_Gallery id=”83″ gal_title=”oct.23 rising fish 70 flows”]
Howdy Friends!
Wow, just absolutely WOW! If I didn’t blog daily and know the date, I would have thought it was just another summer day here in Decker’s! The sun was shining, the fish were rising, and the week ahead looks great! Let’s get to the fishing first, shall we? As you know, the flows are low. 64 (cfs) below Cheesman Dam, with about 70 (cfs) through Decker’s and Trumbull. I’m currently reaching out to the USGS to maybe find out why this station is reading 94 (cfs) when the rest of the river is in the 60’s! However, for the time being, I will keep the graph on the daily blog. Ok, enough of the flow issue, let’s talk about the fishing. As the morning sun makes it way over Rampart Range and fills the Decker’s/Trumbull section of the valley with all that warmth, the midge and blue-wing hatch really starts going strong at about 10:30. Fish are sipping throughout the day and feeding aggressively in the faster moving water. Something I’ve figured out in the last couple of days, with the drop in the flows, was that I seem to be catching more fish on the “bubble lines’ that are forming along the seems in the river. This is where the fish are just gorging on the small, size #24 midge and BWO’S that are just covering the surface of the water. After doing a little fishing this morning and making my way back to Trumbull and Decker’s, I took a walk up the YMCA road to the “wire” where I observed pretty much the same pattern of sipping fish and the assortment of dry-flies filling the air. After walking the river today for a couple of hours and speaking with several Angler’s, their were a few bugs of choice that seemed to be repeating. On the dries, it was the small, size #24 parachute, size #24 Duck-winged BWO, Trico-spinner, size #24 caddis. I personally had success over the last week by throwing a single dry-fly, such as a parachute or small caddis, then I simply trail an emerger such as an RS-2, tan and grey, olive flash back midge, or another small midge of choice! It’s looking like we’re going to have great weather for the entire week, so book your guided trip with the friendly folks at Flies and Lies http://www.flies-n-lies.com. These guys are friendly, knowledgeable, and will most likely get you on the fish before you know it! If you need last minute supplies, check out their full selection of UMPQUA flies https://umpqua.com/products/flies, clothing and everything else you may need for a day on the World Famous, South Platte River, Decker’s, Colorado. Need a cabin for the night? No problem, they’ve got those too! Other options for lodging include cabins for rent by http://www.southplatterivercabins.com. These cabins are available year-round for daily or weekly rentals. Be sure to stop into the Decker’s Country Store and speak with Bob or Phyllis to discuss rates and availability. What am I going to eat while I’m there, you ask? Don’t fret my friends! Let the Decker’s Corner Cafe be your spot for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Visit their website at http://www.deckerscornercafe.com for the full menu! Today’s picture gallery is from my adventures over the weekend and some of the areas that I visit! I hope you enjoy the underwater shots of the trout, I like those the best! That’s all for now my friends! Heading downriver tomorrow to fish the “Nighthawk” section of the South Platte! Hope to see you on the river soon!
