July 28, 2023-Weekend Preview
Good morning Folks,
Floating Update
Flows through Deckers this morning are holding at 232cfs. You’re still going to have to deal with the shallower sections. However, this is better than last weekend’s, 165cfs. One of the big issues we see when the flow gets low, is busted tubes along the river. Please don’t be that person and pick up your garbage. If you are planning on floating the river today, just be sure to be equipped with proper safety gear and remember to never float alone. High of 90 today, with afternoon thunderstorms. Please read the safety information below, as this should be your number one priority. Also, please keep in mind the rules around parking, camping, and day-use areas as you enjoy your time on the South Platte. BRING CASH! You cannot use your debit/credit card to pay for day-use fees. Please be aware that you will have to pay for each vehicle that enters the day-use area parking lots. What this specifically means is that ALL vehicles that are utilizing the parking lot must pay the $10 day-use fee. There is NO FREE TEMPORARY PARKING at the day-use areas along the river. Season passes for access to the day-use areas are only $100. Thanks for continuing to support the website and our National Forests.
Fishing Update
Some would argue that this is the best time of year to fish the South Platte. I guess that depends on what you mean by “best time”. For those of you that enjoy the heat, but also love the reward of watching a hungry trout annihilate a hopper pattern, this is the time of the year for you to fish! With a virtual bug buffet available to the trout, you can start your morning off working the banks with a dry-dropper and ease your way into the riffles. Then, armed with a stone fly, hare’s ear, and followed with an emerged or pupa. you’re ready for some action. Camping
If you’re thinking of camping along the South Platte this weekend, get here early. Folks, as I also work for ExplorUS, the company that manages the day-use areas and campgrounds along the river, I can tell you that the campgrounds will be full by 4pm, at the latest. Be sure to get here early and make sure your read the information posted. For more on the camping in the immediate area, click here. https://discoverdeckers.com/explore-deckers/camping/
