June 21, 2016

Good morning and welcome to the first day of the 2016 Summer season!!! After some pretty serious thunder and lightning storms last night, we are waking up to some cooler temperatures and clear skies,  but it’s going to warm right back up today folks!!! As of 5:45 this morning, the Trumbull Station is reporting discharge flow of the South Platte at 540 (cfs). Just got back from my morning walk on Y-CAMP Rd and it was glorious!! Nothing but sunshine and warm temps. At 7:30,  it’s already about 65 Degrees and going to warm up to about 87!   Due to all of the rain and hail last night, the run-off into Horse Creek was pretty intense. It’s caused some cloudiness below the bridge, but much more clear as you go upstream from Decker’s.   Yesterday morning, I fished between “Ray’s Run and the “Turn Hole.” I did real well with my bug of choice lately, the size #10, Olive Wooley Bugger. I caught two Rainbows and one Cut-bow with about a dozen casts of my bug! I caught them on the swing as well as on the dead drift, as I would simply give it a little “jig” at the end. Prior to the wooley bugger glory, I had some success with a prince nymph and a grey rs-2 up by the Lone Rock Campground. Be sure to say hi to Jerry, your Lone Rock campground host. Make your campground reservation right here at http://www.reserveamerica.com/camping/lone-rock-campground. Just click on the “Things to do” page and click on the link.

Since I began writing my blog, I haven’t had a day off from my day/night/all the time job, to do much other than report to you the river conditions and what the bugs are doing around Decker’s.  Well, finally with a day to myself, I packed up the day-pack with some water, the Canon T5 DSLR camera, and I was off on my first full day of reporting on whatever interesting subject or topic would present itself. I headed out of Decker’s to the east on my walk to Trumbull, hoping to get a few good shots with the camera. Trumbull has a full time residential population of about 30! A pretty big metropolis to someone like me who lives in a town of one! This time of year, the wildflowers found throughout the South Platte River Valley are in full bloom and host a variety of bees, birds and other wildlife that feed on the sweet nectar of the various flowering plants. I invite you to come on up and see for yourself why it’s such a special place to call home. I hope you enjoy the picture gallery that includes some great shots of “Chicago Jack” legendary billiards player from the “Windy” City, and calls Trumbull his summer home. He has a knack for his humming birds and they seem to be right at home with him! Have a great day! Remember! Take a kid fishing.
