Good Morning Everyone!

Flows through Deckers this morning, 167cfs. Friends, this is getting to the really low side of being able to float the river. At 167cfs, you will be better off finding faster water elsewhere. Finding a section and repeating is going to make your day much more enjoyable. One of the big issues we see when the flow is this low is busted tubes along the river. Please don’t be that person and pick up your garbage. If you are planning on floating the river today, just be sure to be equipped with proper safety gear and never float alone. Mostly sunny today, with highs in the upper 70’s and low 80’s.  Please read the safety information below, as this should be your number one priority.  Also, please keep in mind the rules around parking, camping, and day-use areas as you enjoy your time on the South Platte. BRING CASH! You cannot use your debit/credit card to pay for day-use fees. Please be aware that you will have to pay for each vehicle that enters the day-use area parking lots. What this specifically means is that ALL vehicles that are utilizing the parking lot must pay the $10 day-use fee. There is NO FREE TEMPORARY PARKING at the day-use areas along the river. Season passes for access to the day-use areas are only $100. Thanks for continuing to support the website and our National Forests.

Greetings Everyone!

Day-use/Picnic area Information

Along the S.Platte River there are many areas to park and launch your craft! However, there are a few things you should be aware of, as the volume of people visiting the area has grown tremendously over the last few seasons. As an employee of ExplorUS myself, I would to explain a few things about the fee based day-use areas and the public parking areas.  Trailers are not permitted in the day-use areas along the river. Overnight camping is NOT permitted in the day-use areas.  If you are planning to access one of the fee based areas, which are Bridge Crossing, Platte River Campground/Day use, Ouzel Campground/Day use, Scraggy View, Willow Bend, or Osprey Campground/Day use areas, be prepared to pay the $10 fee. Remember to bring cash or a check. ExplorUS does not accept credit or debit cards at this time. Each vehicle entering the parking lot will be expected to pay the $10 fee, as space in this parking lot is limited. This includes using the restrooms, stopping to inflate your floatation device, use of  picnic tables and grilling areas. If you are planning to bring multiple vehicles to any of these fee based parking areas and get out of the vehicle for any period of time, you will be expected to pay the $10 fee. Allowing multiple vehicles to stop and occupy parking space without paying the $10 fee, is preventing those that are willing to pay the fee, the opportunity to do so. Refusal to pay the parking fee can result in a fine in excess of $100. The only pass accepted for free entry into the day-use areas is the seasonal pass that is sold by Explorus. The other pass that gets you 1/2 off the daily $10 fee, is the America the Beautiful, LIFETIME PASS ONLY. That includes the Senior, Veteran, or Disabled Pass only.  Explorus does not honor the ANNUAL America the Beautiful Pass. Also, please keep in mind that the day-use areas and campgrounds along the river are Federal properties. This means that the State Parks Pass that you may have purchased through your car registration process does not apply. Please read the sign boards carefully, as they explain the passes that are accepted and those that are not. Along the South Platte River, from Deckers Corner to Nighthawk(Pine Creek Rd) there are 16 free public parking areas and 2 public restrooms. Floating Conditions for Sunday,
June 25, 2023

Current flow through Deckers below the bridge is fast, at 461. It’s not crazy fast through the wider and deeper sections of the river. However, the more narrow and shallower sections can be pretty intense and intimidating for the younger floater. Currently, the water temperature is about 59 degrees. Good news! Higher daytime temperatures and plenty of sun make it feel much warmer. This flow rate is certainly acceptable for tubing. Just make sure that the younger ones in your group are comfortable with being in the river at this rate. with this flow. Realistically, I think this flow is more conducive for experienced Kayak users and those that may be comfortable on a stand-up paddle board. Also, be sure to be equipped with proper safety gear and never float alone. When the flow is at this rate it’s best to avoid the upper Deckers area and stick to the middle section of the river. The section of river I’m referring to is between Bridge Crossing day-use area and Scraggy View day-use area. The upper and lower sections present more of a rocky/rapid float that can be a little too much, not to mention could be terrifying for some less experienced floaters.. Hope to see you on the South Platte soon!

Good Morning Folks!

We’ve made it through winter and we’re well on our way into the summer season! Lots to get you updated on this morning. First, we’ve had a wonderfully wet couple of days and some much needed moisture is certainly a welcome sight. As I’ll be working for the company that manages the campgrounds and day-use areas again this season, I’ll soon be providing regular updates and information about these areas, as a representative of ExplorUS.  The Day-use areas are $10 this year and are strictly enforced by the U.S.Forest Service, as well as ExplorUS staff. As I’m currently suffering with multiple tears in my rotator cuff, my days out on the river have been few and far between. However, I did manage to get out there yesterday afternoon and managed to get a few in the net. Small, size 22 BWO’S, Hi-vis BWO, and a Griffiths Gnat did it for me. The flow is at 110cfs, with excellent clarity. These fish were very selective yesterday, so make sure you’ve got 6x tippet. If you are looking for a seasonal pass from ExplorUS, formally Rocky Mountain Recreation, I should have a few available on the river this weekend.  Look for me in the Logo truck and I can sell the pass. They are $100. More soon folks!  Have a great Thursday.

Hey Folks,

Well, it’s taken a little bit longer to get some water into Cheesman Reservoir, but we’re finally seeing a little more water below the damn. Yesterday’s increase has raised the current flow from 125cfs, to 174cfs. In this range, this increase makes all the difference. It’s going to be a much more enjoyable float, allowing you to float longer distances without having to get up and walk through shallower sections. With this increase in the flow and today’s forecast, it’s going to be be busy up here today. So, with that in mind, be sure to get here early if you’re planning on using the day-use areas for parking. Also, please remember a few things if you’re planning on using these areas. They are not free to park! The fee to use these areas is $8. Please remember to bring cash, as all the day-use areas are self-pay, unless you are going to try to park at Bridge Crossing. That day-use area is staffed from Memorial Day through Labor Day, every Saturday and Sunday. You can be ticketed by the US Forest Service for not paying when parking or using these areas. Also, please remember that these day-use areas do not provide trash cans or dumpsters for your trash. Please pack it all out. Have a great day and we hope to see you on the river soon!
