Campground Restoration @ Midland Tunnels
May 4, 2019 - May 5, 2019
- FreeDescription
Where You’ll Be:
You’ll spend the weekend in the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA), one of Colorado’s most popular boating destinations for whitewater rafting and kayaking. This particular campground is located near the rural town of Buena Vista and the historic Midland Tunnels, and offers proximity to hiking, mountain biking, wildlife viewing, and rock climbing opportunities.
What You’ll Do:
On this moderately-sized project, you’ll join volunteers ages 12+ to improve a campground with great potential for river and recreational access. Over the weekend, you’ll help create a sustainable trail to the river, reseed restoration areas, install buck-and-rail fencing, rough out a parking/camping area, and clean up fire pits to install permanent, sustainable metal fire rings. Our volunteer Crew Chefs will provide meals on Saturday and Sunday.
Why It Matters:
Your efforts will help transform this campground into the beautiful destination we know it can be! With the river and outdoor recreation opportunities nearby, the area has tremendous potential. But without proper infrastructure, it is turning into a squatter’s area and sensitive habitat has been destroyed by vehicles and user-created trails. Your help will prevent further damage, restore disturbed areas, and provide sustainable access to the river for recreational and commercial boaters.
Need-to-Know Details:
- Minors under 16 must be accompanied by an adult 21 years or older on single-day projects. Minors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult 21 years or older on overnight projects.
- Volunteers are responsible for providing their own camping equipment. VOC will provide meals, tools, and work gloves.
- Cancellation: Our partners rely on VOC volunteers to accomplish critical stewardship needs, and our projects often have wait lists. If you need to cancel, please contact Emily Schaefer at 303-715-1010 ext. 116 as soon as possible so we can free your spot for another volunteer and have a full workforce.
