Pre-runoff is upon us and flows through Deckers are on the rise. While it’s not substantial, flows have risen by roughly 30 cfs and currently sit just below 90 cfs. Flow increases on this stretch are typically a result of Cheesman dam releases but considering Cheesman Flows have held steady, we can point to Horse Creek as the main contributor. Horse Creek feeds into the South Platte just above the Deckers bridge, so if you’re fishing below the town of Deckers, be prepared for slightly off-colored water. If you’re above the bridge, flows are a bit lower and clarity is better. Regardless of the section, fishing is great right now. Trout are active and spreading out throughout the day. Nymph rigs are the most consistent approach right now but if you’re looking to fish dry flies, make sure to have some Griffiths Gnat’s, Matt’s Midge’s, Parachute Adams and Sparkle Duns on hand. 11 am – 4 pm is when we’ve seen the most surface activity. When nymphing, lead with a larger attractor pattern, such as a Guide’s Choice Hare’s Ear, Flashback Pheasant Tail, Rainbow Warrior, egg, leech or worm. For your trailer, trout have been responding well to flashback Black Beauties, Mercury Midges, Sparkle Wing RS2s and Darth Baetis.
